What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian?

A nutritionist is simply a person who advises people on dietary matters regardless of training or education. This could literally be a relative or neighbor who likes to read fitness magazines. Nutritionists should not be confused with dietitians!

A Registered Dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; has completed an internship or practice program, and has passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetics Registration. Many states, such as Georgia, have regulatory laws for dietitians that govern their practice and ensure their capabilities to serve the public.
