Google My Business | The 5 Alarming Problems of an Unclaimed Business

Drip. Drip. Drip.

You come home from work and notice something that wasn’t there when you left in the morning.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

It’s a puddle in the middle of the kitchen floor. You know that it’s coming from the bathroom upstairs. You sigh in frustration. You need a plumber and you need one quick. What do you do?

What you don’t do is reach for the Yellow Pages. Nobody grabs the Yellow Pages anymore to find a plumber, a chiropractor, a bakery, or any other kind of service or product. They grab their phone and do a search like “plumber near me” or “bakery in hamilton, mt” to find who or what they need.

Google then returns a list of options based on location, relevance and proximity. These listings are referred to as Google My Business … and just about every business has a Google My Business listing, whether they know it or not. In fact, only 44% of businesses have claimed their listing on Google. Has your business been claimed? Do a search for your business and look at the results. When you find your listing, do you see something that asks, “Own this business?” If you do, that means you’re part of the 56% that hasn’t claimed their business.

Google My Business - Own this business?
Does your business listing on Google say “Own This Business?” If so, your business hasn’t been claimed … yet.

Why should you claim your business if your business is already listed? There are five (5) main reasons you want to have your business claimed:

  1. You run the risk of having someone else attempt to claim it as their own
  2. Others can make suggested edits to the hours, description, services, etc.
  3. Reviews aren’t responded to – including the negative reviews that should especially be addressed.
  4. Powerful insights & analytics to see trends, how people find you, when customers are calling you, etc.
  5. Your listing on Google (Google My Business) is often the first impression that a new customer will have of your business. Without claiming it as your own, you miss out on posting pictures, videos and information to help them see what makes your business the perfect fit for them.

Claiming your business as your own using Google My Business is easy and free. All you have to do is answer a few questions and then Google will send you a post card within about five (5) days. This post card will contain a unique 5 digit code that you’ll use to verify that the location is correct and that you’re the owner. Claiming your business is the minimum that you should do.

After you claim your business, you should also optimize your Google My Business listing by:

  • Adding pictures of the interior, exterior, of you, your team, etc. to help (future) customers get to know you and your business before they step foot in the door.
  • Add 360° pictures to give (future) customers an interactive experience that helps them feel familiar with your business.
  • Add a list of services and prices.
  • Create weekly posts that share what’s new, what events you have coming up or any offers you may have.

Google My Business is a free service provided by Google. Google wants to have a robust and comprehensive list of businesses so they can be the premiere place for users to find the business they’re looking for. So the more you optimize and make your listing everything that it can be, Google “rewards” you by bumping you up in the search results. Consider it a small pat on the back.

If you’re a plumber, a bakery, a chiropractor or offer any other kind of service or product, do a search and see if your business has been claimed. If it has, check to see what you can do to optimize it for better results.
